The significance of a photograph...
I love a good photo. I also don’t mind the occasional selfie or snap of a delicious looking meal. If you’ve ever spent some quality time with me, you know that I am not scared to sneak away just to snap a decent photo. My only problem is that I am selfish with my photography. Selfish…like in the fact that I don’t like to be told to take a photo. To me, taking a photo is a creative action and a photograph is a creative product of that action…it is pure, sometimes thrilling, and depending on what you’re using to take the photo, the process can be exhilarating. Of course not all people see it this way. Some would rather live in the moment in its entirety and later reference mental pictures for a trip down memory lane. For the rest of us, even a selfie is a trigger for a realistic and detailed journey through our past. Photos allow us to transcend the mental and physical spaces. I know I am getting all artsy on you, but I am so serious. Photos trigger emotions, they can unearth details the naked eye misses on a daily basis, and most importantly, photos bring people together.
My mom has recently has an issue with the use of cell phones in lieu of a professional camera at big family events. I think it's funny because both of her children own multiple “professional” cameras at their disposal and she too has had a secret love affair with photography. So maybe she’s a little spoiled! The truth is, the world now has access to technology that we can take advantage of. Some professionals knock the use of the camera phone, they say it ruins the art form…I say snap away with what you have! All photos are meant to be admired; professionally taken, printed and framed, or not. Back in the day the most commonly used form of cameras were universal, disposable, and had a limited lifespan. Today, you’ve got camera taking magic wands at your fingertips and an instant ability to share your photos with the masses! Don’t be afraid to snap some magic, people just like me are admiring them from a far!
